Government employers faces IT contractor shortage

A new report warns of a growing shortage of IT contractors with sufficient security clearance in the public sector.
A new report warns of a growing shortage of IT contractors with sufficient security clearance in the public sector. Sensitive networking problems demand security clearance in some industries and the need for cleared IT contractors has risen sharply because of government efforts to join up different departments.
The shortage of cleared IT contractors is pushing up prices and delaying projects, according to recruitment and human resources experts.

Projects in intelligence, criminal justice, joined-up government initiatives and cross-government schemes have all driven up demand for IT contractors with security clearance, while increased demand in the financial services sector has also put pressure on the IT employment market, Computer Weekly reports.

Byran Corke, head of public sector IT recruitment at Hudson, said: "There is a huge shortage of people with security clearance in the public sector, especially in the project support arena. There is a shortage of security-cleared candidates with all skills, but we are seeing a bigger demand and a declining pool."
According to Rethink Recruitment, demand for skilled IT contractors with clearance has risen by at least 320 per cent in the past year, with rates for contractors up from around £600 to £750 or more.
