Member Spotlight: Neil Coe - Carta graphic design

Neil Coe - Graphic Designer
With a move to the Penwith district and an established career in the graphic design Industry, Neil wanted to gain back the freedom of designing that had been gradually squeezed out working for a design agency. He describes the experience "I wasn't able to give the client's brief the full commitment it needed. There wasn't the time to think, research, create and play with ideas. It's this 'time' that's so important to the final design." With this, Neil started Carta in 2004 with the sole purpose of producing graphic design that helps businesses promote themselves.

Neil works from his studio in Penzance which he finds the perfect location for his work. He has a growing Cornish client base with the Arts sector playing a large part, "One of my first local projects was for a designer maker, after that, recommendations came from others in the same field which is a fantastic compliment. Most of these are now good friends as well as clients." Building a friendly relationship and getting to know the business of his customers is important to Neil. He finds that the design process is more productive and the end results reflect that.

But it's branding that Neil is most passionate about. He finds this element the single most important part of the whole design process, "Keeping the brand style consistent through all promotional literature is the key to good branding and will lift the profile of the company in doing so." Alongside branding and design comes printing and Neil always tries to use local printers to keep the Carta carbon-footprint small whilst adding to the local economy.
