Member Spotlight: Trystan Negus - Tridian Software Ltd

Returning to Cornwall after building almost 10 years of experience in commercial software development, Trystan Negus of Tridian Software is seeking contracts and opportunities in his home county.

After growing up in Truro, Trystan read Physics at Southampton University before specialising in computing. Employment with MATRA Systems provided the bedrock of his experience, with a highlight being the development and installation of a ticketing system for the new Norwegian railway between Oslo and Oslo Airport.

Point Of Sale and financial software was developed for a variety of networked platforms in a variety of languages: C on DOS, C++ on embedded and server UNIX, Visual Basic on Windows, assembly on 8051, SQL and Java amongst others. PRINCE2 was adopted to regulate project management and delivery, and Trystan went on to lead a team to develop and upgrade the Oslo system to credit-card based 'ticketless' travel.

Trystan's portfolio widened further with the move into contracting: PHP/MySQL web development with AltCom in Penzance, and a contract from the founders of MATRA to develop a large proportion of their new POS system tailored specifically for schools. Once again a networked system was written from scratch: financial multi-user desktop applications over local networks securely synchronising data with a Web store & payment engine, transaction based reporting, banking modules, SAP integration, automated network-aware upgrades, pupil meal profiling and more, all over hundreds of client sites.
Writing software is a skill like any other, but there is an art to solving a problem with an elegant solution that is efficient and resilient. Not only does it promote pride, but it means the problem need not be solved again. This is a discipline that Trystan enjoyed with physics, and continues to inspire him in software development.
