Penzance eCommerce developers altcom have just finished integrating a new Gift and Sponsor management system into the www.coolearth.org site. Run by Cool Earth Action, and designed & built by altcom earlier this year, coolearth.org lets the public sponsor blocks of rainforest in the Amazon in strategic areas.
Their sponsorship is used to protect the rainforest from destruction by pricing deforestation out of the market. In return sponsors get a certificate and can log in and view their sponsored blocks on the the Cool Earth site using integrated Google Maps. The new gift system makes it possible to sponsor an acre as a gift for someone and they receive the certificate (by email or by post). The recipient can also have access to their gift "acre" online to zoom in view it.
The gift system has been integrated with a new sponsor management tool that has enabled partnering with the Co-Operative Bank and its new "think" credit card. All new "think" credit card users will receive a half acre block as a "gift" from the Co-Operative bank. altcom Director John Cowles said: "We had to pull out all the stops to get the system coded, tested and live in time for the "think" credit card launch and the pre-christmas rush. Since going live we've been astonished by the number of people who have been using the gift system - as an unusual and very personal eco gift, I think coolearth certificates are great. I've sponsored my own acres."
