New DPN Website Scouts Out Talent For JobsAug 22, 2005 - 07:24 PMA website designed to bring creative professionals together with information communication technology has been launched in West Cornwall. Penzance based group Digital Peninsula Network (DPN) has set up ICT-scout, a pioneering job search website. Jennifer Atherton, centre manager of DPN, said: "Businesses can register for free and advertise to find the right people for whatever they need, from the installation of a large computer network or the design of a complex website, to the drafting of marketing copy and provision of photographic services." Details are then sent as an alert to a selection of members who match the skills required. Rupert Hitchcox advertised for a website programmer on ICT-scout for his new business - and within four hours he had received seven replies and four positive leads. He said: "I have had a fantastic response to the advert last week. It was easy to register the position on the ICT-scout website and the job was sent straight to a target market with great results." The site also has a 'job alert' service for registered members, who have created a profile for themselves, indicating their skills and the types of work they are interested in. When an advertiser posts a new work opportunity on the site, that matches a member's profile, that member will immediately receive an e-mail alert. Lynda Davis, director of DPN, anticipates great success for ICT-scout. "We're all very excited about this project and expect that ICT-scout will quickly become the South West's largest and most important web-based resource for the ICT and creative sectors," she said. "It's going to connect an enormous bank of local skilled professionals with advertisers across the entire country. "There is a tremendous wealth of ICT and creative talent in the South West. ICT-Scout will help raise both their profiles and that of Cornwall as a serious place to do business." Digital Peninsula Network is funded by Penwith Council and Objective One. (Cornishman - 21 July) Local News - Save Our Sleeper UpdateAug 22, 2005 - 07:23 PMThe government now admits that it does not know the costs of running the threatened London-Penzance sleeper train. In a statement to the growing Save Our Sleeper campaign, which now has more than 850 signatures on its petition, a Department for Transport (DfT) spokesman said: "The Invitation to Tender for the Greater Western franchise has been issued and as part of this bidders have been asked to bid and separately price sleeper services. "Costs to run the service are thought to be around £5m, but this is simply an estimate. The intention of asking the three franchise bidders to price the sleeper service separately is to see if the services can be run more efficiently with lower costs and higher usage, and to consider whether there are any viable alternatives. "No decisions have been taken and the bids will be looked at once they have been submitted in the Autumn," says the DfT. SOS Joint Chairman Andrew Roden says: "This is the first time the Department for Transport has admitted to us that it doesn't know how much the sleeper train costs to run, yet the Strategic Rail Authority said in June that it believes the sleeper is not value for money. "It's a step back from the letter sent by DfT official Roger Jones to Andrew George MP, where he claims the service costs around £5 million to run, and definitely covers less than half the costs. "The most common comment I receive about the sleeper train is that it needs better promotion: if more people know about the service, more will use it, and we wouldn't be fighting to save it now. "The Save Our Sleeper campaign has real momentum behind it now, and we need everyone who cares about the South West, and about travel, to sign our petition, write to their MPs, and write to Alistair Darling to show how much they value this vital service. I really believe that we're going to save this train - but we need as much support as possible, and fast, because we don't have long left." Broadband UpdateAug 22, 2005 - 07:22 PMBroadband arrives at the most south-westerly point of the UK! The actnow team was amazed by the enthusiasm for broadband among Scillonians when they visited the Islands recently. This month all but one of the remaining exchanges in Cornwall go live so wherever you are in the county you should be able to receive broadband. The actnow team recently visited the islands with to offer help and advice on signing up to broadband. They were amazed by the enthusiasm and demand for broadband among Scillonians. FFW are one of Europe’s largest law firms and a founder member of the European Legal Alliance, Brandlab are now providing creative and strategic support to both organisations. Brandlab was the brainchild of two friends from Falmouth College of Arts, Kriston Reid and James Stanton, both of whom studied BA (Hons) Graphic Design. Since forming Brandlab in London in early 2003 the pair moved the company back down to Falmouth, Cornwall. The past 12 months have seen the firm grow to its current size of 5 full-time staff and 7 freelancers, all whom also graduated from what is now University College Falmouth. Jono Wardle, 2D Design Fellow at University College Falmouth, said “We are especially pleased that Brandlab has won this important piece of business, not only because they’ve decided to base their fast growing company here in Cornwall, but also because the designers at Brandlab originally studied Graphic Design here at the College. We wish them all the success they deserve.” A Hong Kong office was set up last year to deal with the small but growing client base they have developed in the region and a London office address has been confirmed last week. Recent accomplishments will surely provide a boost to the Cornish economy - the extra work generated will provide a welcome opportunity for emerging creative hub that is the South West. Creative Director James Stanton explains how a flexible business model has helped Brandlab to achieve such success “Involving new people in your work means involving new ideas, fresh perspectives and can open up a project in surprising ways. Rather than following trends in London, we use the best local talent, take our ideas to the City and bring the clients back to Cornwall. Our work with other agencies has also broadened our vision and introduced us to innovative techniques and methodologies. I’m pleased to say that the benefits of this are all too plain to see for us at the moment.” Brandlab have continued to attract major national and international clients, clearly being a metropolitan mover and shaker is no longer a prerequisite for success. A spokesperson from the Cornwall Design Forum said “This is further evidence that clients are realising outstanding design work can be created anywhere and they don’t need constant face to face meetings as in the past. The creative industry already knows this and as a result we are delighted to see an influx of innovative design consultancies, such as Brandlab, to Cornwall. We wish them all the best in the future.” If you have any questions, would like a comment, or need this in an electronic format, please contact the Brandlab studios on 01326 311488 or email studio@brandlab.co.uk Homedianet - Wired For Success A business started by new DPN member Duncan Cook man has won a major national award following its outstanding success in providing housing developments with entertainment and data networks. Homedianet is one of only 20 companies nationwide successful in the National Business Awards organised by the New Entrepreneur Scholarship. As a prize founder Duncan Cook will receive two weeks at Babson College, Boston, internationally recognised for entrepreneurial leadership. The award comes on the back of his success which has seen a series of large contracts to install residential networks in new developments. These include installations in a new £1m house in Bude and plans under negotiation to equip a development of 30 new homes in Cornwall. Duncan's business plans were put in motion seven months ago when he consulted Business Link Devon and Cornwall at a start-up roadshow in Redruth. Pointed towards a New Entrepreneur Scholarship through the West Cornwall Enterprise Trust, he has been able to develop the key business systems needed to turn his ideas into a successful business. Praising Business Link for its information and advice, he described it as a "world class service". "If I have a problem my first thought is to put in a call to Business Link - and if that person doesn't know the answer they always find out and ring me back." Born and bred in Hayle, Duncan returned with his wife Suzanne and two children to his Cornish roots last year after working for eight years outside the county for a number of large companies in network design and IT support. "I left at the age of 24 because there were no jobs in Cornwall," he recalled. "Today there's a real buzz about the county thanks to initiatives and funding such as Objective One. I always wanted to set up my own company in Cornwall and now the business environment has enabled me to do so." They provide householders with a solution for data and entertainment distribution, allowing them to experience information or entertainment wherever and whenever they want, throughout their home, using discrete technology. The flexibility the system gives potential home buyers to change the way rooms are used - for example the minimal effort required to change a bedroom into an office - gives added potential value to new developments. "The intelligent home is limited only by the imagination," says Duncan. "We're doing exceptionally well and have been overwhelmed with the response. We are currently recruiting more staff to meet the demand."(thisiscornwall website) New Member Directory - Coming Soon!Aug 22, 2005 - 07:20 PMDPN has just received confirmation that we have been granted a Phoenix Fund bursary. (Cornwall Film) UK Film Council announce details of a £3 million National Lottery Funded initiative The UK Film Council today (6th June 2005) announced details of a £3 million National Lottery funded initiative to increase the range and breadth of cinema-going across the UK over the next three years. Targeting young adults, general mainstream cinema audiences and film ‘buffs’, the UK Audience Development Scheme is intended to stimulate the viewing of specialised, ie non-mainstream or overtly commercial, films in the UK. Announcing details of the scheme Pete Buckingham, the UK Film Council’s Head of Distribution and Exhibition said; “Our objective is to transform the range and breadth of cinema going in the UK continues with today’s groundbreaking call for partners to promote film culture. Specialised films are not just the preserve of the cultural elite or audiences in the West End of London. Our goal is for the greatest cinema from around the world to be seen by all UK audiences and to give cinemagoers the chance to learn more about film and film making. This initiative will help build on existing opportunities to reach this goal.” For more information: http://www.ukfilmcouncil.org.uk/news (Cornwall Film) IT consultants wantedJun 22, 2005 - 05:17 PMThe government wants to sign up computer consultants for contracts with Whitehall, the police, the NHS and even charities. Treasury purchasing agency OCGbuying.solutions is looking for IT consultants to provide services across the public sector and for not-for-profit organisations. The invitation to tender, published on 2 June 2005, said that the type of consultancy required will range from one-off knowledge based advice to the delivery of extensive reports. Consultancy will be provided on a "call off" basis, to Whitehall departments and agencies, the police, NHS, local councils, education organisations and charities. The move is part of the Catalist programme, a single purchasing systems to replace the government IT catalogues run by the OGCbuying.solutions, an executive agency of the Office of Government Commerce. The contract will be divided into eight categories covering: information systems strategy, consultancy and development; the design of IT architecture, including networking and communications; e-business systems; IT security; telecommunications; application design; emerging technologies; and enterprise resource planning. Suppliers will be able to bid for work in one, a number or all of these categories. The winning suppliers could face further competition. OCGbuying.solutions will allow contracting bodies to use electronic reverse auctions, which will re-open competition between companies. The process involves registered suppliers bidding online for a piece of work, with the possibility of revising their bid in an effort to win the business Hugh Barrett, chief executive of OGCbuying.solutions, said that reverse auctions can play an important role in providing value for money in public sector procurement. "Our challenge is to make e-auctions an integral part of the procurement process toolkit," he said.
