UK businesses are wasting around £300 million a year on powering idle computers, according to a survey. The research, carried out by PC software firm 1E in conjunction with the Alliance to Save Energy, found that nearly half of UK respondents do not turn off their PCs at work overnight and during the weekend. Kateri Callahan, president of the Alliance, said: "Powering down inactive PCs can provide a simple yet effective way for businesses to reduce overhead costs and environmental impact."

MP highlights 'unfair' tax burden on freelancers

The Professional Contractors Group (PCG) has welcomed an MP's call to abolish what it considers unfair tax legislation. Liberal Democrat MP Lorely Burt introduced an Early Day Motion in Parliament to abolish the Intermediaries Legislation, also known as IR35. This states that freelancers pay a higher rate of tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) than employees. Ms Burt told the PCG: "1.4 million freelancers in the UK are facing the perpetual threat of a costly and distressing HMRC investigation under IR35, which obliges them to spend time and money that could be better spent generating wealth for the UK economy."
