This short course will help develop your IT knowledge and brush up your skills in those commonly used applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The first course begins February 2009 and will be taught over two hourly sessions for a 6 week period, along with two workplace mini-observations.

SWS are currently building Their new South West Screen website which they want to really celebrate the success of the South West. Due to launch in March, the site will offer a range of information and services which will benefit the region's creative media industry. SWS are looking for strong images from South West productions (production stills, behind the scenes shots, animation frames and location stills) and images that represent the South West's media culture to use on the site. Government announces funding for firms who train unemployed

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that employers will be given funding when they provide training for the long-term unemployed. He told an employment summit that employers would be given up to £2,500 for training someone who had been unemployed for more than six months. The £500 million initiative, overseen by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), will also help people set up businesses and provide advice on business plans as well as funding for the first months of trading.

FSB launches 'five-point plan' to create new jobs

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has launched a plan designed to tackle rising unemployment and create 400,000 jobs. It has outlined a five-point plan which it believes will help to create and retain jobs including promoting part-time working through tax exemptions; investing in apprenticeships; simplifying legislations; giving small businesses more opportunities to bid for public contracts and cutting payroll taxes.

Firms warned of prison sentences for health and safety breaches

Business owners are being reminded that breaches of health and safety law will soon carry stricter punishments. The Health and Safety Offences Act 2008 came into force last Friday. Under this law, anyone found to have breached legislation could face a custodial sentence of up to two years. David Young, a regulatory partner at Eversheds law firm, told the Times newspaper "Breaking even the most minor health and safety laws can lead to prosecution."

EIB (European Investment Bank) loans UK banks £650 million for small business lending

Three UK banks have borrowed a total of £650 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB) in order to lend to small businesses. The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), the Bank of Scotland (BoS) and Barclays Bank will act as intermediaries for the funds and pass them on to small and medium-sized firms. Simon Brooks, vice president of the EIB, said that the EIB would increase lending by almost 30% during 2009 and 2010 to try and help businesses during the credit crunch.
