Susannah Clemence is a narrative artist. Ink and pencil drawings, etching, screenprints and egg tempera are the primary media used to depict scenes: mainly people in situations, both seen and imagined, in a style that bridges fine art and illustration. About me... My drawings are mostly about the things I see around me. Occasionally, someone will tell me a story and I can't resist drawing it. I have also illustrated my own stories, and done some commissions for published writers and for magazines and newsletters. I was more-or-less home-educated as an artist, with painters, sculptors, photographers and illustrators on both sides of my family - my father John Clemence was a university lecturer in art and a fine painter and photographer, maternal grandfather Edward Ardizzone an acclaimed illustrator. Both of my brothers, Dominic and Quentin Clemence, are also artists, although we all work in completely different media and styles. Since coming to Newlyn in 2000, I have taken up invitations to join art organisations and societies, including the Newlyn Society of Artists, who exhibit regularly in the Newlyn Gallery, and the Porthmeor Print Workshop, based in St. Ives. I'm an inveterate and restless organiser. In Somerset, I initiated the annual festival of "Art on the Levels", and in Newlyn I set in motion both the artists' (political) forum Voice of the Arts in Newlyn (VAN) and the Newlyn Arts Festival. Sometimes I wonder if people are my real medium, not paint. In the past year I have been doing portraits in oils, for the pleasure of a really long study, and also lino cuts, as a way of simplifying drawings. These are taking me back to the agit-prop posters I so admired in my late teens, with a clear, powerful visual and perhaps verbal message. I owe a great debt to Cliff Harper for his visions of an achievable Utopia. Activities Visuals Illustration Arts Crafts |
